China Internet Report Gives a Glimpse of Tencent’s Dominance

The first notable term mentioned in the above article correlates to social media, particularly social media networking sites.

The report classifies the various types of Chinese social media to include more content driven or socially driven types in addition to whether you friend strangers or acquaintances. The latter refers to relationships and the former refers to user's needs.

The SNS platforms include Weixin (mobile IM), Renren, Kaixin, Tencent Pengyou (all general SNS), Qzone, Tencent & Sina Weibo (microblog), Diandian (microblog),  Sina blog, Douban (discussion board/forum).

It's also possible to provide some examples of new media from the previously mentioned content. For example, if I read one fo your Sina blogs and leave a comment, this is an example of interactive communication on the Internet. If I do the same thing on Renren, by leaving a comment in reagards to your status update, I am this creating new media content.

There is further mention of desktop software favorites divided into three levels. The content level directly correlates with digital media's grammar of multimedia as these platforms utilize different kinds of media in one package. Kugou serves as a primary example.

Additionally, all three convergences play a part here.

Firstly, technological convergence is visible in SNS platforms such as Weixin. Weixin is a typical example of the merging of telecommunication, computing, and media into a digital environment. Weixin is also enhancing the user's experience and improving the way we interact with media content. The same could be said of Tencent or Sina Weibo as these two platforms are alos often utilized in a digitally mobile environment.

Second, economic convergence occurs as a result of technological convergence. Furthermore, Tencent's dominance of China's social media playground provides more evidence of economic convergence. One of the negative implications of economic convergence is less choice. With Tencent's popularity, less choice could very easily become the standard, as its competition is forced to fold their operations.

Thirdly, cultural convergence plays a role in the creation of these various platforms. Some, not all, are based on Western SNS platforms. Tencent and other like-minded companies come up with ways to both personalize and localize their products in order for them to become relevant to Chinese consumers.

I have not exhausted all the possibilities of analyzing this article, but merely provided a foundational base of where social media, new media, multimedia, and all three types of convergence present themselves.

Week 14 PPT, tasks, and a final exam overview have been added to their respective pages.
First, week 14 tasks include:

In this section there are 15 questions. Answer the questions. Select the best answer for each question.  Write the letter on the answer sheet.

Section B: Fill in the Blanks (30%, 1 point each)
Some words are missing.  Write the missing words on the answer sheet. For numbers one through five, use your AP stylebook to look up the correct usage of the missing word(s). Spelling and capitalization must also be correct in order to get credit.

Section C:  Short Answer Definitions (10%, 1 point each)
In this section there are 10 words (from your quiz). Briefly define each term, just write the main points. Write the answers on the answer sheet.

Section D: News Article Analysis (30%)
In this section you will read two short news articles. Choose ONE to briefly identify the following: what convergence(s) are taking place; the technology’s grammar (if present); whether it is social, new, or just related to digital media (if present); and any other MAJOR terminology or concepts from the textbook. You must also briefly identify why for all the previous listed information.
