China Internet Report Gives a Glimpse of Tencent’s Dominance

The first notable term mentioned in the above article correlates to social media, particularly social media networking sites.

The report classifies the various types of Chinese social media to include more content driven or socially driven types in addition to whether you friend strangers or acquaintances. The latter refers to relationships and the former refers to user's needs.

The SNS platforms include Weixin (mobile IM), Renren, Kaixin, Tencent Pengyou (all general SNS), Qzone, Tencent & Sina Weibo (microblog), Diandian (microblog),  Sina blog, Douban (discussion board/forum).

It's also possible to provide some examples of new media from the previously mentioned content. For example, if I read one fo your Sina blogs and leave a comment, this is an example of interactive communication on the Internet. If I do the same thing on Renren, by leaving a comment in reagards to your status update, I am this creating new media content.

There is further mention of desktop software favorites divided into three levels. The content level directly correlates with digital media's grammar of multimedia as these platforms utilize different kinds of media in one package. Kugou serves as a primary example.

Additionally, all three convergences play a part here.

Firstly, technological convergence is visible in SNS platforms such as Weixin. Weixin is a typical example of the merging of telecommunication, computing, and media into a digital environment. Weixin is also enhancing the user's experience and improving the way we interact with media content. The same could be said of Tencent or Sina Weibo as these two platforms are alos often utilized in a digitally mobile environment.

Second, economic convergence occurs as a result of technological convergence. Furthermore, Tencent's dominance of China's social media playground provides more evidence of economic convergence. One of the negative implications of economic convergence is less choice. With Tencent's popularity, less choice could very easily become the standard, as its competition is forced to fold their operations.

Thirdly, cultural convergence plays a role in the creation of these various platforms. Some, not all, are based on Western SNS platforms. Tencent and other like-minded companies come up with ways to both personalize and localize their products in order for them to become relevant to Chinese consumers.

I have not exhausted all the possibilities of analyzing this article, but merely provided a foundational base of where social media, new media, multimedia, and all three types of convergence present themselves.
