After reading and listening to a lecture about Chapter 1, what are the most important points you would tell someone about convergent media?

Please answer my question by leaving a comment. Make sure you tell us your English name.

Yes, Epperly, I would wholeheartedly agree. Cultural convergence shows that intercultural communication (communication across different cultures) is a direct result of new media technologies, or even the result of convergent media (old media and new media meeting together in the new medium).

I think the technological convergence has brought great convenience to us. It's kind of ingrained in nearly every aspect of our life. This convergence offers us a new way to communicate, learn, etc which shows us a brandnew world. PS: About TV(the future of convergence) this chapter has referred to at last , can we consider the melding of the television and PC as a kind of technological convergence?

Daisy,
I agree. Technological convergence has made our lives much easier and improved many aspects of our lives.
P.S. Yes, the melding of TV and computer technology such as watching and downloading TV programs on the Internet is a kind of technological convergence, but it is not New Media. Why? Because, it is not interactive.

As far as I am concerned, I would tell people the future of the convergent media. Yesterday is history, we should pay more attention to what it would like in the future as tecnology developing. It has brought many changes to us to enrich our daily life, and what surprises will it continue acheiving? we can learn from the text book that the future television will be the symbol of convergent media, besides,we can imagine more,.

Excellent response. Yes, both case studies provide good examples of the future of convergence as we already have historical examples of convergence happening. It is still important to have a historical context for convergent media, and even new media so that we may be able to predict or insinuate new trends in convergence and new media technologies.

After read the chapter one, i have a general idea about how the old medias were replaced by the new medias or how they combined.
Also i see how the new medias change and affect our lives. There are many aspects, such as economy, culture and something else. i think we should hold an objective attitude, cause there are so much affects which the new media bring us, something good, something bad. We can contact with our friends without consider the distance but people sometimes think of the quiet life they used to live when they feel that they can never escape the noise of jobs. We can get lots of imformation of all kinds but we do not tell which is true. We see many companies flourish by the development of media. We also can find some quit the stage. In one word, we need to use the media as a smart tool in this Information diversity age.

Well said, Bunny! Just remember that economic, cultural, and technological convergence refers to new media and old media combined in a different medium. New media, muck like old media, can also stand on its own. Chapter 1 focuses mostly on the convergence of the two forms and as you stated, tries to encourage us to understand the pros and cons of convergence and using media effectively in the digital age.

After reading and listening to a lecture about Chapter 1, it shows me what the convergence by exampling telephony is and introduces types and implications of convergence. And with the development of technology, mass communication has changed a lot.
I also get characteristics and functions of mass communication from this part.
Then, by learning theories of communication, I have better understood communication from a theoretical perspective. The future of mass communication would make us feel unexpected.
The superior part of my comment is a summary of chapter1. Furthermore, the most important points are characteristics and functions of convergent media.

After learning the first chapter of new media, it suddenly dawns on me what a big change has taken place in the past 10 years. Consequently, I'd prefer to tell that great changes the convergent media bringing to us is of great importance. Changes made include media organization, media type, media content, media distribution, media audience, media profession and attitude and value changes. To fully understand these changes and to make good use of these changes will bring us both lots of convenience and information.

I haven't be more aware of what a convinient world I am living in before I took New Media class, especially when I saw the comparison and convergence between new and old media. We young people were born with new media and have no concious about it's convinience, but if one day all our access to new media was cut off and time went back to our grandparents' generation, may be we would be bored and anxious to die. However, the old media stil has it's charm. As information overloads through Internet and television, old media can provide a more peaceful style of reading. Just imagine that in a rainning afternoon, you take a magzine or a book, and read it thoroughly instead of going through a plethora of websites like a scanner, how wonderful the life will be!
All in all, new or old, fashion or old-fashion, it all depends on our desire. As a STS student, both old and new media are useful, and I wish that I would spend more time on classic transltion books in the future instead of just surfing on the Internet.

You make quite an incredible amount of accurate observations here. This class is meant to serve as an opportunity for all of us to open our eyes a bit wider and observe what would happen if we all lived in a non-digital age. Would we, like you have stated, feel so bored that we would wish death upon ourselves? It's hard to imagine life without always being connected. On the other hand, you are right about old media still having a very warm place in our hearts. It's all about finding the right balance. We can't just be new media consumers and creators, we must balance that sphere of power and influence by humbling ourselves and reading a good book on that rainy afternoon you mention.

After reading and listening to a lecture about Chapter 1,I think the most important point is the amazing changes of the media brought by convergence. For example, as for the changes in the organization, in the preconvergenced world, centralized media organizations created and published on predetermined schedules. A newspaper was printed daily or weekly. However, the Internet-based media can be less centralized. Maybe it is because of the change in the organization patterns. Also, there are changes in type, content, and usage. As the mdia changes, our ways of lives are changed, too. Thus, it should be attached to great importance to the amazing changed in the media world in order to live a better life in the future.

I would also tell people new media is around everyone— it’s available almost everywhere. New media is new but easy to approach, it’s available for ordinary people. Actually, we ordinary people are playing the larger part in the developing of new media. Everyone can has his own voice in this stage.

New media really changes our lives in many aspects. It also presents the whole world vividly to us, so new media contributes a lot to cultural convergence. For example, I have seen plenty of foreigner elements involved in TV series. In the S04E11 of Doctor Who, Chinese elements characterized by red lantern and traditional music were involved in; and in the latest episode, America’s cowboy culture is in it, telling me the their motto, “we got our own arrangement”. It’s so amazing that we can touch different cultures thanks to new media.

I love your example from Doctor Who, but I want to be clear that this is an example of convergent media, and NOT an example of new media. New media is an interactive form of communication that uses the Internet so unless we watch a television show that has been formatted especially for viewing on the Internet AND allows viewers to "interact" with what they are watching, then we can not call it new media. Your example relates, as you have said, to cultural convergence.

Convergent media has developed so rapidly and successfully, and people live their lives in it. Internet connects globe together, which makes information sharing no more a problem. But it requires consumers to choose and make use of information rationally. Extreme speeches and purposed actions are brought to us together with something good. So we got to be smart and sort out truth.

Don't forget that most of us are connected to the Web, but there is still the problem of access. Remember, the digital divide still exists. The media is developing rapidly these days. It is easy and simple at the outset. As time goes by, it is getting complex and useful. The function and context of media are various, which narrow the distance of people and improve the communication condition. What impresses me most is that new media has come to a position that allows people to seek for information, send feedback and share their life at will.

After learning the chapter 1, the first thing I want to say is that new meida and mass media are not comletely divided. New media doesn't mean there are no traditonal elements at all. They still support each other and traditional media will not die. Moreover, because of technological, culture and economic convergence, the world is getting smaller, as we all heard about "global village". New media provide us a chance to know different people and cultures that are far from us. It's really cool!

I like that you made sure to mention that new media isn't necessarily completely "new." Of course it borrows elements from traditional media, or old media. And yes, convergent media is old and new media "supporting" each other. You offer a great analogy in regards to the consequences of convergence; our world is certainly getting smaller and giving many people opportunities to interact wit other that our ancestors probably never dreamed of.

All aspects of development in digital media touch on the notion of media coconvergence , and we can look at three main categories of convergence which lead to the changes taking place in the media industries . They are technological convergence , economic convergence and cultural convergence . Of course , convergence media make us get in touch with the world and people more closely.

The point I learned about convergent media from chapter 1 is that old media and new media are gradually come togeter, for the teconology development and the changes of people's mind. Thus many changes happend, we change the way we get information, the way we comunicate and the way of entertaiment. Old media is not disappeared but intergrate into new media and become a part of it

Before learning to the lecture about chapter 1, I had been thinking about a question: what will be the “final version” of the media? It’s newspaper? Facebook? or any other revolutionary media that haven’t been invented? I was really confused. But now , I think I have found the answer to this question-it’s the convergent media. We chat with friend in Facebook. we also read news on the newspaper. All the medias no matter they are old or new, have become part of life. I don’t think that we should try to figure out the best kind of media anymore. Because without any kind of them, our life wouldn`t have been so easy. I hold a firm belief that as the technology developing, the bond between old media and new media will become much stronger, which is really significant to our life and our society.

New media is more like a symbol for the technology development and the change of people's mind and it is more open to all the people. For instance, the program which I work for in the TV station not only has its regular broadcast everyday, but also has its Weibo on the Internet which is open to all the citizens to have discussion about the program and give us some suggestions. I like your metaphor of old and new media being pushed around. In a sense, this is what convergence does. It plays with the levels of old media we use and vice versa. It does seem hard to imagine the world without convergent media. Pointing out that the Internet has changed daily communication is the inevitable nature of creating such a beast. Your final metaphor also leaves us needing to consider how heavily we rely on new media technologies to just even make it through the day.

as for the convergence media, in my opinion, the most important is its implications on our audience. i will refer to the vital points. first, apparently, the media type has changed, the printed media has been mixed with the digital media. second, thedigitalization is the trend. on the digital media, we have the hypelink to other media content and the on-demand content is increasingly popular. third, the access of the media content has changed a lot, the portable media device and flat-screen technology let us take our media with us and access the content in any places.
the convergence media is a trend. it has been influenced and also will influence our society sweepingly.
